Full excavation of the existing driveway surface is another available option to the homeowner whose driveway needs repaving. During this process the entire asphalt surface is removed as well as any expansion areas that are desired (fig.1).

Modified stone is then added to the existing base to insure a 6 – 8 inch layer of stone over the entire area. The driveway is then allowed to settle for a period of approximately 3 weeks. The driveway is usable during this time (fig.2).

Finally the stone is re-graded and compacted thoroughly. Then the entire driveway is repaved with a 2-inch base course of asphalt followed by a 2-inch wearing course of asphalt. If the condition of the driveway is beyond resurfacing due to severe cracking or if tree roots have damaged the driveway considerably, then this method is the best option.
